Samsung SyncMaster 172T

After it is connected to the computer, the first thing you will notice when you load Windows is that the screen looks distorted (stretched horizontally). This is because the resolution of Windows before you plugged your monitor in was probably not a widescreen resolution. To change that, go into your display properties and set your resolution to 1280x768. Then, the picture will become much clearer. While it is a smaller resolution than a regular 17 inch monitor (vertically), this allows it to have its widescreen shape. Whether or not one wants a widescreen monitor largely depends on usage and personal preference. The monitor’s 15:9 ratio is what makes ideal for watching movies. Having a widescreen monitor also allows you to have a buddy list on the left while still having plenty of room for your other windows, and it provides a lot of room on your desktop. However, again, whether or not you like it for simple non-multimedia tasks is personal preference; some may enjoy the vertical space on the screen one gets from having a regular 17 inch monitor (or larger) and might feel a widescreen monitor as “scrunched”.

This monitor has three different pre-set settings for brightness using its MagicBright technology. When you hold down the correct button on the monitor, you can change the brightness depending on what you are doing: it has the brightness levels “Text, Internet, and Entertain.” Text mode makes using the monitor ideal for just that: typing text. Doing this does not require a very bright monitor and less brightness is more favorable. Internet mode is the middle mode; it provides more brightness than text mode for looking at pictures and other multimedia found on the internet. Entertain is the brightest mode and makes the monitor one of the brightest I have seen. This mode best takes advantage of the monitor’s amazing brightness level, and is ideal for watching movies and television (assuming you have the correct hardware).
