RecordNow MAX - CD/DVD Burning Software from Stomp

Let's try recording a data CD (my entire Documents and Settings directory from a backup I made will be used in this example).

As you can see from the pictures, the size of the CD 408.60 MB (a tad more than the directory size, which is normal).

It took 3 minutes and 50 seconds to burn this CD (with my 16x burner) and there were no errors.

Now, let's try copying the CD I just created to another CD using a direct on-the-fly CD copy.

This operation took 3 minutes and 58 seconds, around the same time it took to burn the CD. Again, there were no errors, which is good for an on-the-fly copy (directly from one CD drive to another). However, one problem with the program relates to copying CDs that have many scratches, which produce read errors. In the past, any CD burning software would rarely copy these CDs successfully. However, with technology that now helps prevent "buffer underruns," or the crashing of the burning process when a CD gets to an unreadable sector and can't continue, this is becoming less and less of a problem. With other burning software, if it got to an unreadable sector, it would write blank data to the CD and continue.

While there are options in RecordNow Max to do this (and enable the technology that helps prevent buffer underruns, which is called "super-link" in my burner's case), many times it will stop the burning process when I try to copy a CD that has many scratches. In other burning software, it finishes burning the CD. This is not necessarily a good thing though. For example, if you are making a backup copy of software and need to use it, it won't work well if at all, since the read errors on the original would prevent the copy from having an intact copy of the data, and therefore files would be corrupted. (Software it is basically useless to install if one or more of the files are corrupted that have any real importance). If you are just copying a backup of your data, however, and the original has read errors, it is ok for there to be errors on your copy since if one file is corrupted, the others aren't necessarily affected. Therefore, that is one downside to this program (that it seems to be more sensitive to errors on the original CD). While it may be a burner specific issue, I have tried it on another computer and it has a similar problem. This problem can generally be prevented by making an image copy as opposed to an on the fly copy (an image copy is when the CD is copied to the hard drive first, and then copied from the hard drive to the recordable CD). This is recommended in all cases, since it reduces errors on the new CD even if it successfully burns with the on the fly method, and it only takes around 5 extra minutes, depending on your CD-ROM drive's speed (that is used to read the original CD). It is also a good practice to take special care of your CDs, as that will prevent many of these problems as well. All in all, due to the availability of these remedies, this issue seems relatively minor.
