160GB DiamondMax Hard Drive posted
by 1gigkid on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at 11:10 PM EST
Whether you embrace such stuff as using a hard drive as a VCR, you can thank these burgeoning technologies for making hard drives bigger and cheaper. Where once it seemed as though apps increased in size to match every increase in hard drive space, now the drives are staying a bit further ahead of the game. I thought the Western Digital 120 GB drive we saw last week was big, but this week, Maxtor takes the lead in capacity with its new DiamondMax D540X and DiamondMax Plus D740X. The 160GB and 120GB DiamondMax D540X hard disk drive kits, as well as the 80GB DiamondMax Plus D740X, all incorporate the Ultra ATA/133 interface, also known as Fast Drive technology. The 160GB DiamondMax D540X also makes use of Maxtor's Big Drive technology to break the 137GB PC OS recognition barrier. Maxtor is including an Ultra ATA/133 PCI adapter card with select DiamondMax D540X and DiamondMax Plus D740X retail drive kits. This introductory promotion is being offered through participating retailers for the D540X (5400 rpm) 120GB and 160GB drives and the D740X (7200 rpm) 80GB drive.

In Full Force With Nvidia's nForce posted
by 1gigkid on Monday, October 29, 2001 at 8:25 PM EST
When the specs of Nvidia's nForce first became known, expectations ran (and still run) high among hardware enthusiasts. And with good reason, because Nvidia's first attempt in the chipset market is packed with new technology: Hypertransport connection between the two bridges, a Audio Processing Unit (APU) with support for Dolby Digital 5.1, and a memory controller that accesses 128 (2x64 bit) bit 4.2 GB/s memory interface. Today, we present you the first retail board which is based upon this exciting new chipset: MSI's K7N420 Pro. The third biggest motherboard manufacturer was again the first to market new chipset technology. Armed with this retail board we decided to investigate Nvidia's bold claims.

VisionTek Xtasy 6964 Review posted
by 1gigkid on Friday, October 26, 2001 at 9:18 PM EST
VisionTek was one of the very first companies out the door with a new GeForce3 Ti 500 card, after offering some fine, low-cost implementations of the previous GeForce2/3 products. The Xtasy 6964 is their new high-end entrant, and judging from their current product line, VisionTek is looking to move up the charts in short order. Not only does the company produce the Xtasy 6964 (GeForce3 Ti 500), but other new products include the Xtasy 6564 (GeForce3 Ti 200) and Xtasy 5864 (GeForce2 Ti) as well. This rapid adoption of the newest NVIDIA products indicates an aggressive move by VisionTek to assume a greater role in the enthusiast market.

Well I guess you all know by now that Microsoft officially released Windows XP today... I guess nothing seems new, since I have had it installed since July, but for those of you running Windows 2000 or 9x it is well worth the upgrade. Just to let you all know (those of you who got in on the MS WinXP "promo") that the first 2000 kits will be shipping tomorrow, the rest on November 9th. I heard the turnout was great at the release in NY, especially everything that took place about a month and a half ago. Anyways I have to go get some work done! ;)

Bell Labs Scientists Usher in New Era of Molecular-Scale Electronics posted
by 1gigkid on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at 10:40 PM EST
Scientists from Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs have created organic transistors with a single-molecule channel length, setting the stage for a new class of high-speed, inexpensive carbon-based electronics. The size of a transistor's channel -- the space between its electrodes -- influences its output current and switching speed. In these new molecular-scale transistors, fabricated by a multidisciplinary team of Bell Labs researchers, the length of one molecule defines the channel's physical dimension; it is more than a factor of ten smaller than anything that has been demonstrated even with the most advanced lithography techniques.

ATI's Radeon 8500: She's got potential posted
by 1gigkid on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at 10:33 PM EST
ATI has officially launched their 7x00 series of cards - including the 7500 we had a look at in August. ATI has also been hard at work sorting out the issues with their flagship 8500 that we ran into two months ago. The Radeon 8500 and 7500 have also received increases in clock speed from the original specs they announced. This could indicate either higher yields on the cores or an even stronger desire to compete with NVIDIA after the release of their Titanium line of cards.

VIA Chipset Sound Card Compatibility posted
by 1gigkid on Friday, October 12, 2001 at 11:59 PM EST
Back in February this year, I discovered an issue when using a Creative Sound Blaster Live! on a motherboard that uses a 686b. I had previously been using the same sound card on a 686a with no problems. So I was a bit confused. The problem was, when I tried to transfer large files between the primary and secondary channel, the system would lock up - 100% of the time. If I removed the sound card, the problem went away. I started doing some investigating on the net. At that stage there were very few boards out there with the 686b. By the time March rolled along, I realized the problem was not on my particular board but on every board I could find with the 686b. So what I did was to stick my neck out, being a new employee at VIA at that stage. I posted in the VIA Hardware forums to ask everyone who had similar problems to post their system configurations so that engineers at VIA and Creative could properly analyze the root cause. With over 400 posts, it was an unbelievable response from the web hardware community. I set about putting all the information together for our engineers to develop a fix.

Windows XP home: Don't go there posted
by 1gigkid on Friday, October 12, 2001 at 11:50 PM EST
Windows XP Home is essentially a downgrade from Windows 2000, gussied up with pretty icons and trimmed out with multimedia features that were mostly present in Windows Me. It is not a viable choice for most professional or laptop users. Though Windows XP's networking capabilities are the best yet, Windows XP Home Edition is deliberately crippled. It can't log on to Windows 2000 domains, which means that you probably can't use it at work-and may not be allowed to, since it can compromise the security of corporate networks.

They have been trying to make them work using the latest 4a bios for the KT7A 1.2 to see if it will work... just as a last resort, but it seems to be a no go. Most people have the 1.2 versions of the KT7A's apparently. With the KT7A rev1.3, the CPU will work and boot with AMD XP and so will the KG7s, though.

The Radeon 8500 rivals the Geforce3 Ti 500 in Quake3 benchmarks, falling behind only a minor few FPS, while completely dominating the 3Dmark 2001 scores. Intel Plays Dirty The Santa Clara, California chip colossus is, by simple virtue of its size, a formidable competitor. But Intel is not satisfied with playing fairly and has been engaged in covert, subversive actions for many years. AMD's Challenge The cause of much of Intel's grief has been a surging AMD. Even in an extremely unfavorable depressed market thrust even further downwards by the recent terrorist acts, AMD's CPU shipments have managed to stay at record levels. However, Intel, with its deep pockets, has launched a price war that has driven down AMD's average selling price per MPU and has resulted in a larger than expected third quarter loss.

Compromise for CD copying is in the works posted
by 1gigkid on Sunday, October 7, 2001 at 10:41 PM EST
The record industry is experimenting with a new strategy for protecting CDs from being copied in CD burners or on computers. Unlike previous anti-copying measures, this plan will place two versions of an album on a single disc: one in standard CD form, modified so that it can't be transferred to a computer hard drive, and another in Microsoft's Windows Media Audio digital format, rigged so that files can be copied to a PC, but with some restrictions on how they can be used.
