OnePC.NET has completed a review of the ClutterBuster Desktop organizer, a must-have product that does wonders in organizing your physical computer desk.

Here's a snip:

OCA Review: Kingmax PC2400
posted by 1gigkid on Thursday, December 27, 2001 at 11:25 PM EST

The OCA crew got the opportunity to checkout Kingmax's PC2400 DDR memory. DDR is certainly the memory of choice for the majority of PC enthusiasts. So does the Kingmax PC2400 have what it takes to compete in today's market? Can they live up to the high standards they set with traditional SDRAM?

Here's a snip:

"One thing that stands out here with Kingmax that you rarely if ever see, is the fact that they actually encourage overclocking. Not something you normally see in this business and a refreshing change of pace from the norm. Kingmax is that absolutely confident in their product that they believe it will satisfy the needs of the most demanding overclockers. Another sweet deal is Kingmax's commitment to quality. They guarantee the memory for life. Quite a bonus in this day in age when your lucky to get a 30-day warranty from most items."

T'was the Net before Christmas
posted by Josh on Saturday, December 22, 2001 at 2:07 PM EST

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net,
There were hacker's a surfing. Nerds? Yeah, you bet.
The e-mails were stacked by the modem with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The newbies were nestled all snug by their screens,
While visions of Java danced in their dreams.
My wife on the sofa and me with a snack,
We just settled down at my rig (it's a Mac).

When out in the Web there arose such a clatter,
I jumped to the site to see what was the matter.
To a new page my Mac flew like a flash,
Then made a slight gurgle. It started to crash!!

I gasped at the thought and started to grouse,
Then turned my head sideways and clicked on my mouse.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
My Mac jumped to a page that wasn't quite clear.

When the image resolved, so bright and so quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick!
More rapid than mainframes, more graphics they came,
Then Nick glanced toward my screen, my Mac called them by name;

"Now Compaq! Now Acer!", my speaker did reel;
"On Apple! On Gateway!" Santa started to squeal!
"Jump onto the circuits! And into the chip!
Now speed it up! Speed it up! Make this thing hip!"

The screen gave a flicker, he was into my "Ram",
Then into my room rose a full hologram!
He was dressed in all red, from his head to his shoes,
Which were black (the white socks he really should lose).

He pulled out some discs he had stored in his backpack.
Santa looked like a dude who was rarin' to hack!
His eyes, how they twinkled! His glasses, how techno!
This ain't the same Santa that I used to know!

With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head,
Santa soon let me know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, gave my Mac a quick poke,
And accessed my C drive with only a stroke.

He defragged my hard drive, and added a "Dimm",
Then threw in some cool games, just on a whim!
He worked without noise, his fingers they flew!
He distorted some pictures with Kai's Power Goo!

He updated Office, Excel and Quicken,
Then added a screensaver with a red clucking chicken!
My eyes widened a bit, my mouth stood agape,
As he added the latest version of Netscape.

The drive gave a whirl, as if it were pleased,
St. Nick coyly smiled, the computer appeased.
Then placing his finger on the bridge of his nose,
Santa turned into nothing but ones and zeros!

He flew back into my screen and through my uplink,
Back into the net with barely a blink.
But I heard his sweet voice as he flew from my sight,
"Happy surfing to all, and to all a good byte!"

Designtechnica reviews Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy MP3+.
posted by 1gigkid on Thursday, December 20, 2001 at 2:27 PM EST

Designtechnica reviews Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy MP3+. The Audigy MP3+ featured Dolby Digital Decoding, 64 Audio Channels, an IEEE 1394 Fire wire port and more!

Here is a piece from the First look:

“If you have a Live!, or especially Live! 5.1, series sound card, I suggest you save the upgrade until later, unless you have $100 burning a hole in your pocket, as was my case. The Audigy does not have much to justify going out of your way to getting it if you have a Live! 5.1 already.. “

OCA Reviews Return to Castle Wolfenstein
posted by 1gigkid on Thursday, December 20, 2001 at 2:20 PM EST

OCA busts out with their review of id Software's latest FPS, Return to Castle Wolfenstein. There is quite a bit of hype surrounding this game, and considering it's based on the Quake 3 engine, it will most likely be at top of many overclockers lists. But does the game live up to the anticipation it has generated?

Here's a snip from the review:

In Return to Castle Wolfenstein (RtCW hereafter) you reprise your role as William ‘B.J.’ Blascowicz, lantern-jawed, nazi slaughtering, all American hero. B.J. works for a secret allied organization who we meet in the first in-engine cutscene. This is where the game really starts to raise your eyebrows. Realistically billowing flags and curtains lead us into an office for a fairly typical ‘talking heads’ type cutscene. But what heads! The facial texturing and animation really grab your interest immediately with competent lip-syncing and terrific texturing. Id software’s Quake 3 engine once again proves what a versatile tool it can be in the right hands. Already I’m impressed and we’re not 30 seconds into the game!"

Epox EP-8KHA+ Review
posted by 1gigkid on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at 10:54 PM EST

Epox EP-8KHA+ Review posted at Processor Emporium.

Here's a snip:

"Overall the EP-8KHA+ is an extremely impressive board. Epox have managed to build upon the strengths of the EP-8KHA and have managed to produce one of the best motherboards which we have seen to date.

Whilst it is apparent that the EP-8KHA+ is the EP-8KHA but with the new KT266A NorthBridge controller chip, Epox have managed to make a number of enhancements which elevate this board above that of its predecessor.

The first and most noticable enhancement is the sheer increase in speed which the KT266A holds over its predecessor the KT266. Epox have managed to harness this power successfully with the EP-8KHA+. Power alone would not be enough if Epox had not managed to done such a superb job in creating a very stable board in the EP-8KHA+. Throughout the test we have been impressed by how the EP-8KHA has been more stable under Windows than even boards based upon the Intel i845 chipset.

We also like the Magic Health menu which appears on the initial POST screen. This is one of the best innovations we have seen recently and is certain to be welcomed by a large number of DIY PC builders. Whether this feature would be welcomed by OEM customers is questionable, but Epox are not aiming the EP-8KHA+ at that segment of the market."

EasyDisk removable USB hard disk review

Do you often transfer data from a PC to another using floppies? Do you need a small removable hard disk to use with your notebook? The EasyDisk could be the right solution for you!

----Preview----
"The installation of the EasyDisk under Windows 98SE was really simple: just run the driver's installation program on the CD and plug the drive in a USB port. If you use a USB 1.1 compatible OS (i.e. WinME Win2000 WinXP) you don't need to install the drivers, in fact after plugging the EasyDisk a window will pop up showing the contents of the unit."

CD-R media: testing for quality
posted by 1gigkid on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at 9:23 PM EST

"So you thought picking up some CD-R media on the way home from work was going to be easy. Dreamer! Instead, you're standing in the store, confronted by a dizzying array of choices: discs that are gold, silver, red, blue, or even purple; speed ratings; pricier certified discs and less expensive noncertified ones; and brands ranging from household names to house labels. Are any of these differences worth worrying about, or can you just grab the color that suits your fancy and get on with your life? CNET asked the experts--and tested the actual media from four common brands: CompUSA, Imation, Sony, and Yamaha. We found that while CD-R media in general are pretty reliable, there are definite differences in quality and some easy ways to avoid bad experiences."

Enermax EG465P-VE - 431w PSU Review
posted by 1gigkid on Monday, December 3, 2001 at 6:03 PM EST

Out of pure necessity, OCA reviews the Enermax 431w PSU. SPeeD had been putting off a PSU upgrade for way too long when that fateful day occurred. Pooof! The ol' PSU blew up. The Enermax has been one hell of a performer and OCA gives a great overview of what this piece of hardware is all about.

Here's a snip:

"The box is good sized and the bubble wrap packing is more than adequate for this type of hardware. What really gets you excited is when you pull this monster out of the box and hold it up for the first time. This bad boy damn sure weights in quite hefty and don't leave ya feeling as if you just blew your wad on a cheap peace of hardware.

Next thing you'll notice the awesome cable wrapping around the main ATX power connector. VERY nice. Enermax is one of the few PSU manufacturers going the extra mile to install this cable wrap, which not only looks much nicer than a fat wad of cables all over the place, but comes in quite handy so as not to get items tangled in between all the wires. It also makes it much easier to route around your case and motherboard."
