Unique ID is built into WinXP final build
posted by Josh on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at 6:45 AM EST

Microsoft has quietly slipped a Universally Unique ID (UUID) into the ISO of build 2600 of Windows XP, thus giving itself the capability of tracking code leaks back to whoever it was that leaked them. News of the UUID's presence originally broke in the Microsoft beta newsgroups, but the matter has been followed up by Steve Gibson of GRC after postings were forwarded to him.

Server upgrades
posted by Josh on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at 3:09 PM EST

I just wanted to let you know of an upcoming server upgrade...  You may not be able to reach our servers between tomorrow and the end of the week at some point.  We are going to do our best to minimize the down time as we upgrade our systems.  The main purpose of this upgrade is to replace our current router with a linux box that would handle all firewalling / routing.  The Linksys just doesn't seem that strong and reassuring.

Net reaching growth limit as more devices connect
posted by Josh on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at 6:40 AM EST

The communications system that glues the Internet together was designed for no more than 4.3 billion computers and devices -- thought to be plenty 20 years ago. Half the connection points have already been assigned, and the life span for the remainder is estimated at five years. At that point, a "No Vacancy" sign may have to go up.

2GHz Pentium 4: milestone or speed bump?
posted by Josh on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at 6:39 AM EST

My, how time flies. It was only in March of 2000 that AMD announced the first 1GHz desktop processor. Now, 18 months later, the first 2GHz processor from Intel has arrived. That's two decades to reach 1GHz and less than two years to reach 2GHz. Next thing you know, we'll be putting a person on the moon!

Anti-Piracy legislation planned
posted by Andrew on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at 3:24 PM EST

Legislation proposed by Senator Hollings of South Carolina would require computer manufacturers and consumer electronics makers alike to have ways of slowing down piracy of music, movies, and other media. However, does this infringe on our rights to copy media for our own purposes (e.g. backup)? Decide for yourself.

Trojan horse can seriously damage your PC
posted by Josh on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at 10:18 AM EST

A Trojan horse that uses ActiveX is lurking on the Internet. Trojan horse Offensive, so named because it makes offensive references within the Windows registry, could arrive via e-mail as a link to a Web page ending in .html. When opened, the Web page will display a button that says "Start." If pressed, Offensive will severely damage your Windows operating system: no icons will be visible on the desktop, no programs will execute, you will not be able to shut down Windows, and you will not be able to work around these effects in the Safe Mode either. According to Symantec, if you have been affected by Offensive, you should contact a computer professional. Because Offensive is not yet widely reported but may cause serious damage, it currently ranks as a 5 on the CNET Virus Meter.

Intel has confirmed it will indeed announce the 2GHz Pentium 4 in just under two weeks' time - just ahead of massive price cuts throughout the rest of the desktop P4 line.

I find it quite funny how I request a P4 1.8GHz to review, and I am told that the 2.0 GHz is going to be announced...

Update
posted by Josh on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at 3:42 PM EST

We have been doing great so far since our launch in May of this year!  We are already nearing 100,000 hits and 30,000 hits per month.  For most sites it takes well over a year to reach that!  Remember to check out our forums, as our community is growing quick quickly.  There is lots happening so stay tuned!  New reviews, and articles will be coming your way with in the next few weeks.  In addition you will start seeing a lot more news being posted.  We also hope to have a contest soon, so register and post in the forums for a head start!  Also just to let you know, we should be switching back to our main configuration next week if our ISP has slowed down code red spreading on its network...  We might also be starting a tech network, and have already registered www.hytekcomputer.net and have found some large sites that would be interested.  See you later!

The Past and Present of VIA
posted by Josh on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at 1:16 AM EST

Here's a preview:

With the introduction of the Pentium (P5 Architecture) and Intel opting to design their own chipsets, we saw few companies able to compete with Intel for the chipset market.  Out of the many chipset makers from the 486 days, only 3 third party makers were able to survive. Of those three survivors, only one company developed chipsets that were competitive to Intel chipsets. With SiS developing value integrated chipsets and ALi absent from the market till the Super 7 standard was released, VIA was the only company daring to compete against Intel.

Promise FastTrak TX2 Raid 1 Kit
posted by Josh on Friday, August 17, 2001 at 3:42 PM EST

Here's a snip:

For as long as I can remember, Raid has been used in high end servers and workstations. Most people have never heard of raid because of one thing, when people think raid, they think expensive. Raid has been considered a very expensive item to add to a personal computer, and in most cases it is. However, with the advent of people building workstations and servers for the home, manufacturers had to design a form of raid that is affordable. Currently 4 companies are making IDE Raid devices. Currently 4 companies are making IDE Raid devices: Promise, Highpoint, AMI, and Adaptec. Currently the top dog of the IDE raid industry is Promise, who started out as making lower end IDE raid cards, to making super high end IDE Raid controllers that are designed for high end servers. Nowadays IDE raid has entered the realm of the home computer. Gone are the days of this once server-only form of hard disk collaboration. IDE Raid is an inexpensive way of allowing multiple Hard Drives to work together. Today we look at the Promise FastTrak TX2 Raid 1 kit, which is designed for workstations and lower end servers.

Server problems
posted by Andrew on Friday, August 10, 2001 at 3:40 AM EST

As you might have noticed, some parts of the website may either not be working correctly or look different. Due to the Code Red worm that spreads on port 80, our ISP decided to block all incoming requests to web sites hosted on their network. So for awhile, our site was down. And if it weren't for James Crivellone, owner of http://www.soundcardcentral.com, it would still be down. He was generous enough to go out of his way and allow our websites to go through his server to be redirected to a different port (that isn't being blocked) on our server. However, now, it is mostly back up and running again. If you notice any problems, please e-mail administrator@hytekcomputer.com, and we will try our best to fix them.

For any of you who didn't understand that technical giberish, basicly, our server went down, and thanks to someone else, its back up again.

Also, some of you may have also noticed that news updates, article and review updates are slowing down. Well, we are getting more staff and hoping to have new articles, new reviews, and more news posted in the not too distant future. For those of you who are still around, thank you for visiting and you will have more to see soon.

Evergreen 3D Amp
posted by Josh on Thursday, August 9, 2001 at 11:17 PM EST

Evergreen Technologies has always been into one thing, Upgradeability in the CPU industry. Throughout many years they have provided users with easy ways to upgrade their computer's processor to the latest and the greatest without having to upgrade your motherboard. Well today we bring you the 3D Sound Amplifier which in many ways follows the exact same principle of bringing 3D Sound to your computer without the need for a soundcard/hardware upgrade. While for most of us this is not a problem. However, if you have a laptop computer or an older system, sometimes hardware upgrade's cannot be obtained/installed. This is where the 3D Sound Amplifier comes into play.

IMPORTANT ALERT: Code Red Update!!!
posted by Josh on Monday, August 6, 2001 at 2:08 AM EST

Looks like I will be up late tonight as I have discovered major problems with our main server.  After Code Red hit the news weeks ago, I grabbed a security update from Microsoft and ran it on my Windows 2000 Advanced Server running IIS 5.0.  Well now it looks like that their patch has been prooven worthless.  I will be up all night (now morning) working on resolving this issue.  It has been brought to my attention after monitoring our server and network that there was a problem.  After looking into it further it has been discovered that we are infact infected with a Code Red II mutant which has swept across our ISP's network and now ours.  It looks like our only solution is to wipe the server's hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch.  Backups at this point have been deemed worthless, because we can't be sure what happened.  Right now you might be noticing that our site is going slow, that is mainly because I am doing an emergency backup across our network of all of our important data.  Tomorrow (later) expect that our site will be unavailable, mainly because we will be reformatting and reinstalling.  This is all thanks to a Microsoft Security flaw that should have been handled better.  More updates to come...

Hercules Fortissimo II
posted by Josh on Friday, August 3, 2001 at 11:33 AM EST

The Hercules Fortissimo II is one level below the Game Theatre XP, however it still offers a wide variety of features for a small price, The Fortissimo features 4 speaker output for 4.1 compatible speakers, or you can also use 2 channel speakers with it, another nice feature is the fact that it offers a separate headphone jack for when the rest of the family is attempting to sleep.  One of the features that really impressed me was the Optical TOS SP/DIF In/Out, this allows the Fortissimo II to plug into the latest of Mini disc players, and any other device that is compatible with optical TOS Link.  The Fortissimo II itself is based off of that Cirrus Logic SoundFusion CS4624 Sound Chipset, which is one step lower then the one contained inside the Game Theatre XP.  The only difference’s between chipset is 5.1 support, and MP3 Acceleration.
